On This Day In 1995...Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Came Out!

Time to start August off with some more of that thing that is lacking in people today, and that my friends is 'knowledge.' On this day in 1995 Wu-Tang Clan hot spitter Raekwon dropped his solo debut, "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx." Along with Raekwon his fellow Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah hopped on much of the album along with other members of the group. Although some say that this album wasn't as good as the first solo efforts of his fellow WTC members, this album was very influential in the 1990's.
If you are a big fan of the Wu Tang Clan, you will make note of the fact that none of the solo projects the members put out are actually 'solo' projects meaning that there are always some of the Wu Tang Clan members on each project, this album perfectly fits into that mold, the only person absent from the Wu Tang Clan on OB4CL is ODB (R.I.P.) The main difference between their usage of multiple features on their solo albums and the over abundance of features on today's rap albums is that their features just make the song that much stronger, whereas today's albums almost need features due to the lack of creativity and all around quality of the albums. Rza handles the production very nicely, actually even stepping his game up quite a bit in my opinion from his previous tracks that he's done. They kept their running theme of using Ku Fung samples, but also added The Killer, Carlito's Way, and Scarface movie samples to give the album a mafia movie-type feel.
The one thing that is especially good about this album are that they lyrics are very descriptive in turn giving you almost a feel that your listening to the soundtrack for a movie. Some would say that the mafiaso themed album during this time period was over done, but I look passed that opinion those people have and just enjoy quality music from one of the top rhyme spitters out of the Wu Tang Clan. Below are some of my favorite tracks off the album (I could literally pick any 3 songs off the album because its that good) and a cdnow.com link so you can purchase OB4CL. Raekwon's sequel to this album, "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2" is slated to drop in January of 2009.

ReplyDeleteIt's funny to think I was only 3 years old when this dropped. I copped this 11 years later, when I was 14 from my local HMV, the price? A quarter of what you would have picked it up then. Definitely a hip-hop classic. Keep reminiscing BFochs, we need that real hip-hop.
