You've seen me talk about how the midwest gets it in. It should be obvious just off numbers alone, don't hold me to this, but I'm pretty sure region-wise we have the most units moved by Hip-Hop/R&B artists. I mean we got Nelly, Eminem, Bone Thugs N Harmony, R. Kelly, Kanye West, a little family named the Jacksons, I mean seriously folks, the midwest can move units!
Now I know there are a lot of people saying, "record sales don't dictate the quality of music," which is true, if things are not marketed properly your music will get overlooked, good or bad. This Cleveland MC makes music for the people who care about record sales and for the people who just like good quality music. This MC's name is Phoenix Jones.
Phoenix Jones, known to his friends as Nix, hails from Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland is a city with a deep crop of talented rappers whose skills range from the street-themed hard hitting raps to the more complex lyrical rhyming and everything in between. Phoenix's rapping displays both styles mentioned as well an ability to provide creativity and great imagery that is deeply lacking in today's rap game.
Nix Jones's hard work and skill has garnered him nominations for the 2006 Ohio Hip Hop Awards as "Artist Of The Year" and a nomination this year at the Ohio Hip Hop Awards for "Lyricist Of The Year." It's one thing for fans to compliment you on your talent, it's a whole nother thing to be honored by your associates and peers. The fact that the fans and co-workers see the talent in Phoenix Jones is a true testament to this MCs ability to bless the mic with real talk and entertaining music.
With the talent Phoenix Jones has, along with the backing of one of the best DJs in the business, DJ G-Spot, the sky is the limit for this Cleveland, OH MC. Not only does he rep Cleveland and the Midwest movement, but he reps Hip Hop, something that seems to be lessening day by day due to artists' greed and hidden agendas.
Along with Donny Arcade, DJ Chong Wizard & DJ G-Spot, Phoenix Jones just recently released a tape of epic proportions called "Machine Killers." I thoroughly enjoyed this tape, I'd give you my synopsis on it, but it's better you give your own review to it by downloading. Below is a little more information about the tape that will better help your listening experience when you listen to it.
Donny Arcade (of the duo LTDA as featured on EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 3 "Knock Em Down") and Phoenix Jones (2008 Ohio Hip Hop Awards Lyricist of the Year Nominee and 2006 Ohio Hip Hop Awards Male Artist of the Year Nominee) (Cleveland,OH) team up with DJ Chong Wizard (Former Justo (R.I.P) Canada's Best DJ Nominee) (Vancouver, BC) on the wheels and DJ G-Spot (2x Justo's Best Midwest DJ Winner, Former Cleveland Scene Best DJ Award Winner)(Cleveland/Chicago/Buffalo) to form an alliance that is spanning across international borders, and bringing glory unheard of before to midwest hip-hop. Enlisting the talents of LT moE (Multi-Platinum Producer/Composer, 2008 Ohio Hip Hop Awards Producer of The Year Nominee, 1/2 of LTDA)(Cleveland,OH/ Atlanta,GA), Mikel J (Intern: Little Big Room, Producer for Tampa Rock Band Suburban Tragedy )(Tampa, Fl/Hollywood, CA) and a host of talented young producers to create a musical soundscape that not only defies the boundaries of current hip hop models, but sets a new standard in the "LP/Mixtape" genre. By using original production, teamed with the artistic direction of Chong, G Spot, and new school artist Sonny Wong, Machine Killers ensures each listener with an experience unparalleled within today's hip hop scene. From the Star Wars-inspired cover art, to the heavy 808 Ohio funk flavored beats, Machine Killers leaves listeners craving for the sequel, already in the works. Fans of early boom bap to the younger hustlers of today can relate to the wide variety of subject matter and intricate wordplay. With an internet presence growing at a massive rate, this mixtape is guaranteed to revitalize interest in midwest hip hop and provide a springboard for more projects such as this one to come.
