It's August 15, 2004, 4:00 in the morning on 38th in BURLEIGH & YO - DOT is doing what any 19 year old is doing in the Streets of Milwaukee, HUSTLIN!!!!! Everything seems calm when all of a sudden a squad car pulls out the alley & slowly rides down the block!!! Luckily the police car doesnt notice YO-DOT Lying on his Grandmothers front porch.
This is just one of numerous typical mornings for the aspiring hip-hop artist................YO-DOT (formerly known as YOLA) was born Demetrius Bennett on March 16, 1985 to the proud parents of Teresa Bennett & Willis Garrett. Little did they know they gave birth to the future of the music we call HIP-HOP. The middle child of 2 brothers, Demetrius struggled 2 grab attention from his loving mother (Eventually his father left his mother 2 take on full responsibility of raising their son) so he found interest in the rapidly spreading music phenom what we prefer 2 now days as RAP.
Studying the likes of legendary hip hop icons NWA, ICE CUBE, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, RUN DMC KRS-ONE, BIG Daddy Kane, KOOL MOE DEE, 2 PAC, NOTORIOUS BIG, Kris Kross & early hip hop heavyweights, the young MC developed rhyme skills at a early age (6yrs old to be exact) & a passion to one day be a force to be reckoned with in today's powerful music industry. Eventually as YO-DOT got older his delivery and style progressed as well. By 14, he and his childhood friend, Joe Mosby formed the group CENO (Clearly Elected Number One) taking a chapter out of Joe's oldest brother, Andrew Mosbey a.k.a Waxx Down's(R.I.P) group DOWN(Doin Only Whats Necessary) Eventually, Joe enlisted himself into the job corp. and once again the little homie was on stuck.
A few months later, YO-DOT bumps into Milwaukee's own Hip Hop legend Big City. Taking the youngster under his wing & mentoring the young gunner with the likes of other X-Rated artists on his Midwest Funk Roster, YO-DOT obtained rhyme skills beyond his years at the tender age of 15 and really got serious about entering the music game. Still true to his roots & XRC affiliated YO-DOT branched off from his XRC brethren with the blessings of BIG CITY to create his own identity. Earlier this year YO-DOT Entered himself in a MC Battle Promoted by Milwaukee's Own FAM 1ST & THE LATE HIP HOP LEGEND BIG PROOF (of D12) R.I.P.
Impressed by the YO-DOT'S battled tested punch lines, PROOF eventually crowned YO-DOT Milwaukee's IRON FIST RECORDS/FAM 1ST FREESTYLE KING!!! PROOF let the YO-DOT join him for SUPER BOWL XL FESTIVITIES IN DETROIT, rewarding the hungry MC for his battle accomplishments. Only in Detroit for 4 days, YO-DOT established a bond with PROOF & His fellow IRON FIST label mates."The Nigga P.(PROOF) took me to his momma crib and we ate chicken & blazed mad trees & played chess like I was one of his own," The young MC boasted!!!!
Tragically months after YO-DOT's star studded encounter, PROOF was shot by a club bouncer at a local Detroit After hour. Saddened by this tragedy in hip-hop, YO-DOT was forced 2 move on and continued recording numerous songs and pursuing his dreams to one day have a powerful impact on music and leave a legacy in music as the late great PROOF did. Fresh off another freestyle win ( 3 TIME ROC DA MIC FREESTYLE KING OF WI ) and with his debut album in the works (JUST IN TYME......BETTER LATE THAN NEVER) on Umbrella Music Group, the sky the limit for this young talented MC...STAY TUNED
Wowzers, this dude is crazy on the mic people, Yo-Dot has raps for days my e-amigos, he won the 2009 Mic Club competition, so you know off top his bars are FRESH. Yo Dot, as you read above, is apart of one of the biggest independent movements not only in the region, but in the entire game, Umbrella Music Group. Everyone apart of that movement gets it in respectively, and Yo-Dot is no different. I mean, PROOF CO-SIGNS THIS GUY!!! The late Hip Hop great would definitely not co-sign anyone that doesn't have that heat...[DJ Drama]Pay Attention![/DJ Drama] lol. He's got another battle coming up on June 6th in Indiana for the Grind Time Midwest Battle competition, be on the look out for a video from that on the e-streets! He's also working on his new album, so big shit is poppin' with Mr. Yo-Dot!
